Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut - 1982
From 1982 to 1993, the Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut (TFN) was officially recognized as the representative voice for Inuit peoples of the region of Nunavut (now a territory on its own) in the Northwest Territories. The organization was involved in several treaty negotiations, as well as land claim settlements, during the 10 years it was recognized. It had taken on this role after the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami held it for some time.
The Tungavik Federation of Nunavut, under the leadership of its president, Paul Quassa, and the Canadian government, under the leadership of Brian Mulroney, as well as the Government of the Northwest Territories, worked together to compose the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement in September, 1992. In November of the same year, the agreement was brought to a vote among the Inuit population, and was approved, with 85% in favour. Pictured above is the scene at the signing on the 23rd of May, 1993. After the agreement's ratification, the Tungavik Federation of Nunavut was superseded by Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated.
